Decaffeinated Teas

The term "decaffeination" is a relatively new term. In 1920, a German by the name of Ludwig Roselius successfully extracted caffeine from coffee beans. Decaffeinated tea did not survive the years during World War II and it was not until 1980 that the same company reintroduced decaffeinated tea to the world. The U.S.D.A allows only teas decaffeinated with Ethyl Acetate and CO2 process to be imported into the United States. Today Halssen & Lyon is the leading processor of all types of decaffeinated tea and supplies The G.S. Haly Co. with a full range of the best of both types in black, green and flavored tea.

Tea from the Camellia Sinensis family contains from 1.6 % caffeine in Formosa broken leaf type to 4% - 4.5% in most other types.  According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, 97% of the 4.5% must be removed in order to label the tea decaffeinated.  Some packers label their teas 98% caffeine free.  These teas, have never been decaffeinated but have a naturally low caffeine count.  Caffeine free labels only apply to herbal products, not traditional teas.
